Meghan Markle in the Kitchen: 7 of Her Favorite Recipes

Do you wish you could eat like Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex? It won’t take any special ingredients, just a trip to the supermarket. In her pre-royal days, when she played a foodie on Suits, Meghan shared some of her favourite recipes — spoiler: they’re full of fruits and vegetables. Take a look at some of her favourite snacks and Sunday dinner recipes.

1. Watermelon and cinnamon are Meghan Markle’s favourite foods.

Meghan shared some food ideas with Today in June 2012, and this was one of them. Her favourite fruit is watermelon, which she recommends sprinkling with cinnamon for an extra kick.

“I’ve always loved watermelon and look forward to any chance to eat it, whether plain or diced with feta and mint and drizzled with olive oil. “It reminds me of summer,” she explained.
“I try to always have a container of watermelon sprinkled with cinnamon on set and at home because it elevates the flavour and makes it feel special.”

2. Seasoned veggie quinoa, Meghan Markle’s “go-to meal on set,” is simple to prepare ahead of time.

Meghan has provided some vegetables and quinoa for an easy meal prep moment. It’s her “go-to meal on set,” she said, and it’s simple to prepare ahead of time.

“I usually cook a box of quinoa at the beginning of each week, and while it’s simmering, I saute onions, garlic, and any other veggies I have on hand in a separate pan,” she explained. “I use Spike, a seasoning blend my mother [Doria Ragland] always used when I was growing up, or a little Bragg Liquid Aminos to season the vegetables. Crushed red pepper and chopped fresh herbs are always present.”

“Toss this veggie mixture into the cooked quinoa and serve as a side dish, poured over a kale salad, or as a quick snack,” she continued.

3. Crackers, hummus, and carrots are Meghan Markle’s “trifecta snack.”

It’s as easy as crackers, hummus, and carrots to eat like royalty. Meghan described it as her “trifecta snack,” saying she likes to serve homemade hummus and carrots on a plate of crackers (she recommended Mary’s Gone Gone gluten-free herb crackers).

She said, “This sounds so simple, but it truly satisfies so many senses—the savoury taste, the textural crunch, the unctuousness of the hummus.”

Meghan probably keeps carrots and hummus in her fridge so she can make this on the spur of the moment.

4. Meghan Markle is a “big fan of Sunday suppers,” and her favourite dish is chicken adobo.

“Sunday suppers are a favourite of mine. The idea of gathering for a hearty meal with friends and family on a Sunday comforts me, whether we’re eating lamb tagine, pot roast, or a hearty soup,” Meghan said.

“It’s so simple—just combine garlic, soy (or Bragg Liquid Aminos), vinegar, and maybe a squeeze of lemon in a Crock-Pot, and let the chicken swim in the sauce until it falls off the bone. I have a lovely Le Creuset that would be perfect, but the ‘Americana’ of it all calls for a Crock-Pot,” she explained. “Place it in the oven and forget about it, then serve with brown rice and salad.”

5. Meghan Markle loves Gwyneth Paltrow’s ‘amazing’ turkey meatball recipe

Meghan ate a lot of turkey as a kid. Her childhood was dubbed “the Bubba Gump of Turkey” by her. Meghan still enjoys it as an adult. Gwyneth Paltrow’s turkey meatballs are one of her favourite turkey recipes.

“You’d think I’d be sick of it by now, but when I come across gems like Gwyneth Paltrow’s turkey meatball recipe, it’s as if the fowl no longer offends me,” she said. “Her recipe’s hint of lemon zest takes the dish to a new level. It’s fantastic and well worth a shot.”

6. Meghan Markle shared her own recipe for fish tacos.

Fish tacos are a favourite of Meghan’s. She was “conditioned to like Baja-style food from the womb,” she said, having been born in California and raised in Los Angeles. Fish tacos are one of her favourite dishes. Do you want to make them the same way she does? Meghan provided detailed instructions:

“Grill some peppers and onions, as well as a couple of fish fillets” (a flaky white fish works best). “Salt and pepper everything, add a squeeze of lime, and stuff it all into a warm corn tortilla,” she said. “It takes only a few bites of food to make me happy.”

7. Kale chips are Meghan Markle’s “healthy potato chip alternative.”

Making homemade kale chips, Meghan admitted, “can be a little time-consuming.” It only takes 25 minutes to roast the kale after washing and drying it. When they’re done and drizzled with olive oil and flaky salt, however, “they become your healthy potato chip alternative that you can reach for when you want to munch on something,” says the author.
