In his new Netflix documentary, Heart of Invictus, Prince Harry makes a shocking revelation while discussing the royal family and his own mental health journey.
The Duke of Sussex, who is open and honest throughout the five-part series, talked about the impact of losing his mother, Princess Diana, at a young age and the impact touring Afghanistan had on him. He also acknowledged that he didn’t have the “support network” available to him at the time.
He began by saying, “The biggest struggle for me was the people,” and continued, “No one around me could really help. I lacked the network, the support system, and the professional insight to understand what was truly wrong with me.
The Duke then shared openly the moment he realized he needed medical attention for his mental health. The first time you seriously consider therapy, unfortunately, is when you’re lying on the floor in the foetal position, probably wishing that you’d dealt with some of this earlier. And I really want to change that.
In a previous segment of the documentary, Prince Harry discussed his tour of Afghanistan and its effects. “After my tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2012 flying an Apache, something started to come undone, and the event that set it off for me was actually my return from Afghanistan, but the material that was emerging was from 1997, when I was 12 years old.”
Losing my mother at such a young age, the trauma I experienced, I was never really aware of it was never discussed it was suppressed, and I never really spoke about it like most children would have done, he continued. But when it all finally fizzled out, I was buzzing like crazy and felt everything instead of being numb.
The royal surprised moviegoers at a theater in California before the documentary was released on the major streaming service. According to what HELLO! has learned, Archewell and Netflix have scheduled US screenings for this week. The Duke also wanted to surprise the audience by visiting veterans in San Diego.
“Tonight, you guys get to see Heart Of Invictus – which has been the last two years in the making – sooner than anyone else, so it will be coming out on Wednesday,” he said to the audience, which was astounded by the Duke’s appearance. You guys will be able to watch it tonight, or at least the first two episodes, to get a taste of what’s to come.
A camera crew followed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex during the 2022 games, which were held in the Netherlands, and captured Heart of Invictus as a result. The series, whose executive producer is Harry, is a part of the Sussexes’ multimillion-dollar contract with Netflix. To date, their only production has been the Harry & Meghan documentary from a year ago.
The five-part series’ synopsis reads: “The multi-episode series will follow the competitors as they train and share inspiring tales of resiliency and hope along the way. The organizers will also be followed as they work to get ready for the Games, which will now take place in the spring of 2019, and as they collaborate with each nation’s team to support their competitors over the following year.
