Prince William is a big dog lover and enjoys meeting them during engagements. Last September, shortly after his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away, he made an emotional remark while meeting a dog.

Prince William greeted a dog in the crowd and said poignantly: “Doggies at this time are very important.” This occurred during a walkabout at Windsor Castle where Prince William and Princess Catherine thanked royal supporters for their support during the trying time.

As avid dog lovers, Princess Catherine and Prince William have a black cocker spaniel named Orla as a family pet. She joined the family in late 2020.

The family had another black spaniel before Orla arrived, named Lupo, who sadly passed away in November 2020.

The Wales family announced the loss of their beloved dog, Lupo, on Instagram at the time.  “He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much.”

James Middleton, the brother of Princess Catherine and an avid dog lover, is the source of both Lupo and Orla.

Many members of the royal family enjoy dogs, and Queen Camilla even honoured her terriers on her gown for the Coronation by having the names Bluebell and Beth embroidered on the skirt.

The Queen said on BBC Radio 5 Live about her love of dogs: “The nice thing about dogs is that you can sit them down, you could have a nice long conversation, you could be cross, you could be sad and they just sit looking at you wagging their tail.”

In the upcoming years, we hope to see many more royal dog tributes!
