During the Women’s World Cup, the Prince and Princess of Wales took time out of their summer vacation to send a heartfelt message to the Lionesses.
England defeated China 6-1 on Tuesday to advance to the tournament’s knockout rounds in Australia and New Zealand.
The Lionesses’ tweet, “Into the knockouts we go.,” was retweeted by Prince William and Catherine’s official Twitter account. The effort is ongoing.
The Prince and Prince tweeted back, adding, “We’re all rooting for you, @Lionesses! [Football emoji] Good luck in the knockout stages.”
Since becoming the Football Association’s president in 2006, William has been a fervent supporter of women’s football promotion and development.
The Prince stopped by the Lionesses at St. George’s Park in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, before the World Cup to wish the team and staff luck.
William joked that he did not typically “travel up and down the country to present them” but added: “There’s one person that deserves this more than anyone else.” William also surprised head coach Sarina Wiegman with an honorary CBE.
“I really did not expect this,” Sarina exclaimed as the group applauded and cheered. “It is very lovely.”
“Thank you very much, but it’s all about the team,” she continued. I’m a little emotional because I feel so honored. Let’s move forward and write more history.
Father-of-three Before the Euro 2022 final, William and his daughter Princess Charlotte shared a video wishing the Lionesses luck.
“We both want to wish the Lionesses the best of luck for tonight,” the Prince began. “We are supporting you all the way because of the amazing job you did in the competition.”
Charlotte added, “Good luck, I hope you win. Bye.”
In the nail-biting Euro final, in which England’s team defeated Germany 2-1, William also gave the trophy to the Lionesses.
On Monday, August 7, the Lionesses will play Nigeria in the next round.
Where are William and Catherine enjoying their summer holidays?
The Prince and Princess of Wales typically have private time with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis during the summer break from school.
They usually spend some of the break at their Norfolk residence, Anmer Hall, and it’s likely that they’ll join King Charles at Balmoral for his first summer retreat.
