The Prince of Wales handed out a very special new creation

Prince William shocks customers as he serves up burgers

Unaware members of the public watched in awe as the Prince of Wales served hamburgers at the Maltby Street Market in Bermondsey, London.

But these weren’t any old hamburgers. To highlight the amazing work of three of the most recent Earthshot Prize winners, Prince William and the Prize collaborated with YouTube channel Sorted Food to create the first-ever Earthshot Burger.

William rolled up his sleeves after helping the Sorted Food creators in the kitchen to distribute the freshly made burger to subscribers of the YouTube channel.

The Sorted Food team put the 2022 Prize Winners, Notpla, Mukura Clean Stoves, and Kheyti’s Greenhouse-in-a-Box to the test to develop the Earthshot Burger.

The Mukura Clean Stove, which uses biomass as fuel rather than charcoal, was used by the Sorted Food Chefs to prepare the burger, which was then served in Notpla-designed takeaway boxes lined with seaweed.

Lastly, an Indian startup to aid small-scale farmers and protect their crops from erratic weather patterns and harmful pests, Kheyti has created a greenhouse-in-a-box. The vegetables used to make The Earthshot Burger are frequently grown in a Kheyti greenhouse and use 98% less water while producing seven times as much produce.

Working with The Earthshot Prize is a dream come true for Sorted Food co-founder Jamie Spafford because it allows us to use our platform to highlight the individuals changing the world for the better.

“The mission of Sorted Food is to make a real difference in the world by bringing joy to people through food, and we know that our community will be inspired to see and support the amazing work that The Earthshot Prize is doing to help people and the environment.”

Being joined by Prince William at our studio and in the food truck was truly a “pinch me” moment; hearing him talk about how passionately he cares about the environment and what The Earthshot Prize is doing was incredibly inspiring and has already given us a lot of ideas for future projects to work on with our community.

The Prince’s Earthshot Prize, which awards £1 million in prize money to the winners in five categories, or Earthshots, including “Protect and restore nature,” “Clean our air,” “Revive our oceans,” “Build a waste-free world,” and “Fix our climate,” seeks to identify and scale-up revolutionary solutions to repair the planet.

The third award presentation, which follows those held in Boston the previous year and London’s Alexandra Palace in 2021, will take place in Singapore in November.
