Prince William tears up as Helen Mirren pays tribute to the late Queen at the BAFTAs

During Dame Helen Mirren’s special tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II at Sunday night’s Baftas, Prince William appeared visibly moved.

Dame Helen said as a special video played on the screen: “The best films bring us together and bind us together through a narrative, just as Her Majesty did so effortlessly. Your Majesty, you were the brightest star in our country.”

The 77-year-old actress has portrayed the monarch on stage and in films, earning an Oscar and a Bafta for her portrayal in the 2006 biographical drama The Queen.

While Kate and Prince William attended the party as guests of honor, Prince William appeared to be in tears during Dame Helen’s tribute.

Before settling into their seats in the front row, the couple entered the awards ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall via the red carpet. While Kate dazzled in a reworked white Alexander McQueen one-shoulder dress with black opera gloves and statement earrings from Zara, William looked dapper in a black velvet tuxedo.

The Queen, who passed away in September 2022 at the age of 96, had a 50-year close relationship with the Academy during which she donated to and supported initiatives as well as attended numerous events.

The profits from the 1972 documentary film Royal Family were donated by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to the Society of Film and Television Arts (SFTA), which later changed its name to the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta), for a new headquarters.

The Queen presided over the official opening of the headquarters in 1976, which resulted in the renaming of the organization. Five decades later, London is still the organization’s home.

The Royal Variety Charity, the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts were all supported by the Queen during her lifetime.

At Windsor Castle in April 2013, Sir Kenneth Branagh presented the Queen with an honorary Bafta award in recognition of her “tireless support” of the business.
