In his new book, Spare, the Duke of Sussex has revealed all the private conversations he and Meghan Markle had with the Prince and Princess of Wales during the early years of their relationship.
Prince Harry has provided royal watchers with a close-up view into their strained relationship, from the bridesmaids’ disaster to their first awkward encounter with the American actress.
The incident supports his unsubstantiated claim that William and Kate and Meghan never got along, which he made during a Sunday night ITV interview with Tom Bradby.
The former “Fab Four” held a second summit at Nottingham Cottage to talk about the escalating tension between the two couples, it has now been revealed. They discussed the reports that Meghan was “Duchess Difficult” and how she made Princess Kate cry.
Prince Harry described how they planned the gathering on their “turf” on December 10, 2018, shortly after he and Meghan had returned to the UK from their first royal tour of Australia, in his searingly honest memoir.
This time there was no small talk when we all gathered in our tiny front annexe, as he described: “Kate got things rolling straight away by acknowledging that the stories in the papers about Meg making her cry were totally false.”
“I know, Meghan, that I was the one who made you cry,” the Duke claims his sister-in-law Kate said.
Although Meghan was grateful for the apology, they were still puzzled as to why this had been reported in the media and what was being done to correct it.
Harry continued by describing how Kate was “flustered” while William provided “supportive-sounding evasions.” Harry was aware that the Palace would take no action because the monarchy “had to be protected” at all costs.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex then turned the topic to where the story originated and who was responsible for leaking it to the media.
Harry said, “We went around and around. “The list of suspects shrank dramatically. Finally, Willy leaned back and admitted that, uh, he and Kate had gone to dinner with Pa and Camilla while we had been on tour in Australia.
And, alas, [Willy] admitted apologetically that there had been conflict between the two couples and that he “might’ve” let it slip.
“I covered my face with my hand. Meg froze. There was an eerie silence. Now that we knew, I informed Willy that you should have known of all people. He nodded. He was aware. Added silence Time had come for them to leave.
Though William and Harry’s conflict is regrettable, there is reason for optimism because royal brothers have experienced disputes far worse than William and Harry’s. Here are six instances of fraternal fallout that got really nasty.
