Prince Harry will take part in a fresh, frank interview for ITV1 ahead of the release of his upcoming memoir, Spare, which is scheduled to air on Sunday at 9 p.m. The Duke of Sussex will discuss his tense relationship with his father, King Charles III, and brother, Prince William, in more detail regarding his decision to leave the royal family.
First glimpse of the interview shows a visibly moved Prince Harry telling host Tom Bradby, “I want a family, not an institution,” and adding, “I would like to get my father back, I would like to have my brother back.”
The 38-year-old also says, “It never needed to be this way,” in reference to “the leaking and the planting” of information.
“They feel as though it is better to keep us somehow as the villains,” he continued. “They’ve shown absolutely no willingness to reconcile.”
Prince Harry only recently acknowledged how tense his relationships with his brother and father had grown during the premiere of the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan.
In the fifth episode of the show, Harry reflected on a private exchange he had with Prince William during the ‘Megxit’ negotiations.
He recalled: “It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me and have my father say things that just simply weren’t true.”
Later, he discussed a joint statement that was issued to dispel claims that William was “bullying” Harry and Meghan out of the royal family, but he denied being a part of it. “I couldn’t believe it, no one had asked me permission to put my name to a statement like that. I rang M and I told her and she burst into floods of tears because in 24 hours they were happy to lie to protect my brother, but in three years they were never willing to tell the truth to protect us.”
