The relationship between the Duchess of Sussex and her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, has captured the attention of the media and the general public from the time of Meghan Markle’s engagement to Prince Harry in November 2017 to the Netflix documentary series chronicling the couple’s departure from the royal family in 2022.
Six months after the royal wedding, in November 2018, reports that Meghan had made Kate cry during an argument about bridesmaid dresses sparked rumors about tensions between the two.
In a historic television interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, Meghan finally took the chance to put the rumors to rest in her own words. She revealed that Kate was the one who had caused her to cry and that she had accepted an apology.
Meghan appealed to followers of both royals as she concluded the conversation about her sister-in-law, saying: “You don’t have to despise her if you love me. And you don’t have to despise me if you love her.”
Kate has made the following statements about Harry and Meghan in the six years of their relationship:
What Kate Middleton Said About Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Engagement
On November 27, 2017, Harry and Meghan made their engagement public during a photo call and in-person interview at Kensington Palace, where they were residents of Nottingham Cottage, a residence just a few hundred yards from Prince William and Kate Middleton’s apartment 1A.
The following day, Kate attended a previously scheduled event at the London Foundling Museum, where she gave a rare interview response in front of the assembled news cameras.
What are your thoughts regarding the announcement of the royal wedding made yesterday? The former Duchess of Cambridge expressed her excitement.
As stated by Kate:
“Oh, William and I are absolutely thrilled. It’s such exciting news. It’s a really happy time for any couple and we wish them all the best and hope they enjoy this happy moment.”
What Kate Middleton Said During Awkward Meeting With William, Harry and Meghan
Along with Prince William and Kate, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry attended the first Royal Foundation Forum three months after they announced their engagement.
The forum was organized to give the royal couples, who were dubbed the new “fab four” by the press, the chance to outline their joint foundation’s mission and how they would collaborate.
At the conclusion of the panel discussion, the moderator, Tina Daheley, awkwardly questioned whether the royals ever had “disagreements about things” while Kate was expecting her third child, Prince Louis.
William laughed after saying, “Oh yes,” in response. In the midst of this discussion, Kate shared her perspective on working with her husband, Harry, and Meghan, saying that collaboration was crucial even though everyone was pursuing their “own ambitions.”
As stated by Kate:
“Can you [William] remember at the sort of big round tables with the charity partners…you know it is sometimes hard to find these common ground where everyone really can get behind and things like that. And actually, that is the challenge. Everyone is/are individuals, they’re all working towards their own ambitions but if you can, for us as patrons but also the charity partners, I think you [William] did a fantastic speech recently about everyone collaborating and working together and in doing so you can make a much bigger impact.”
What Kate Middleton Said About Meghan and Harry’s First Pregnancy
Reports that the duchess and Kate did not get along had started to spread by the time Meghan and Harry revealed at the end of 2018 that they were expecting their first child.
On November 28, the British tabloid The Sun published a report claiming that earlier in the year, during a dispute over bridesmaids’ dresses, Meghan had caused Kate to cry. The next day, Kate broke her customary silence while attending an engagement in Leicester and talking about Meghan with a group of well-wishers.
Are you looking forward to Meghan and her new baby? The royal acknowledged it as “really special” in his reply.
As stated by Kate:
“Absolutely. It’s such a special time to have all these kiddies, and they’re cousins for George and Charlotte and Louis, so it will be really special.”
What Kate Middleton Said About the Birth of Lilibet Mountbatten Windsor
Nearly a year after leaving their positions as working royals and relocating to the U.S., Meghan and Harry made the announcement that they were expecting the birth of a second child on Valentine’s Day 2021.
A month later, the couple made the gender of their unborn child public during a shocking interview with Oprah Winfrey, during which Meghan claimed that Kate had made her cry before her wedding.
On June 4, Meghan gave birth to a girl named Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, and two days later she made the announcement. Members of the royal family, who had come under fire for allegations of cruel treatment and, in the case of one unnamed member, racism due to remarks about the children of the Sussexes’ skin color, posted their congratulations online at this point.
On Kate and William’s official social media accounts, they expressed their “delight” at the news of Lilibet’s safe arrival (also known as Lili in her family).
Message posted on social media by @KensingtonRoyal
“We are all delighted by the happy news of the arrival of baby Lili. Congratulations to Harry, Meghan and Archie.”
What Kate Middleton Said About Not Meeting Harry and Meghan’s Daughter
A week after Lilibet was born, Kate was asked by First Lady Jill Biden, who was visiting Britain for the G7 summit, if she had any “wishes” for her “new niece.”
Kate expressed her “excitement” and expressed her desire to meet Lilibet soon. The royal admitted that she hadn’t “FaceTimed” with the child since her birth in response to a follow-up query.
As stated by Kate:
“I wish her all the very best. I can’t wait to meet her because we haven’t yet met her yet. But hopefully that will be soon.”
