Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have issued a new statement arguing that “Megxit” was never about stepping away from the spotlight following the release of their intensely personal Netflix docu-series.
The royal couple have insisted that their decision to retire as working royals in 2020 had nothing to do with privacy, despite the fact that their six-part documentary offers an incredibly candid look into their public love story, their contentious relationship with the media, and everything in between.

They reiterated their desire to continue their roles and public responsibilities in their statement announcing their decision to step back, according to their spokesperson Ashley Hansen, who spoke to The New York Times.
“Any suggestion to the contrary raises a crucial issue in this series. Even though they are choosing to tell their story in their own words, the tabloid media has fabricated a completely false narrative that permeates news reports and public perception. The information is readily available to them.

We intend to step back as’senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen, Meghan and Harry said in a joint statement at the time of their shocking announcement. We feel ready to make this adjustment thanks to your encouragement, especially over the past few years.
The update follows Thursday’s shocking revelations from the highly anticipated Sussexes Netflix documentary.
In the third episode of the series, the Duchess alleged that “salacious” rumors were “planted” in the media prior to her 2018 nuptials to Prince Harry.

Every day, we played whack-a-mole. It was like, “Wait, another one just appeared,” every day. Another story? Hold on, hold on.
Newspaper headlines flashed on the screen, including references to drug use and statements like “related to serial killer.”
They were digging through the shadows and dragging people out to fabricate and plant the most obscene stories they could, Meghan continued.
