The Earthshot Awards ceremony, which is scheduled to take place late on Friday, will be hosted by Prince William and Princess Kate.
William served as the inaugural event’s host last year. The event honors and grants money to environmental projects that will make the world a better place for future generations. David Beckham, Catherine O’Hara, and Rami Malek, who starred in No Time to Die, are among those who will present awards, and Billie Eilish will perform at the event’s conclusion.
This year, initiatives to create cleaner-burning stoves and a bubble barrier to stop plastic from entering the ocean from the Netherlands and Kenya, respectively, are competing ideas.
The Prince of Wales wore a sharp suit, and the Princess of Wales looked chic in a bright green dress, paying homage to the green event. Kate and William looked stunning in the extravagant dress.
The finalists, according to William, demonstrated there are “many reasons to be optimistic about the future of our planet” and were “innovators, leaders, and visionaries.”
He continued, “They are investing their time, energy, and talent in bold solutions that have the potential to not only address the most pressing environmental issues facing our planet, but also build communities that are healthier, more prosperous, and more sustainable for future generations.”
A standing ovation greeted the Prince and Princess of Wales as they entered the stage to begin the ceremony, which honored the colonists who arrived in Boston 400 years ago. “Respect the lands and waters,” Elizabeth Solomon, a Ponkapoag from the Massachusetts tribe, urged the audience.
Rami discussed the situation and said: “We are currently experiencing the biggest crisis of our lifetime, and it is likely that future generations will also experience the biggest crisis. But hopefully the measures we take now will make that challenge less difficult for them.”
The audience enjoyed a variety of musical performances, including those by Annie Lennox, who sang Here Comes the Rain Again, and Billie Eilish, who sang My Future virtually.
John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot goal served as the model for the Earthshot initiative, and his daughter Caroline attended the Boston-based gathering.
Prior to the event, William spent time with Caroline while she gave him a tour of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.
The awards presentation will be recorded on Friday and broadcast on Sunday.
