In advance of their upcoming Netflix documentary, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared a number of new images, some of which appear to have been taken just before their engagement in November 2017.
Five years ago, the couple stood in the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace to announce their happy news to the media, with the former Suits actress debuting her sentimental engagement ring. After a very romantic trip to South Africa, Harry made his quiet, private proposal at their then-home, Nottingham Cottage, which he revealed at the time.
The couple can be seen jumping in the air in front of a small bar in the latest trailer for their show, Harry & Meghan. The former Suits actress is wearing small denim shorts, an open shirt, and hiking boots. She added sunglasses and a hat in cream and black that appeared in a previous image of her and Harry standing atop a jeep.
A final picture of the couple, both wearing casual T-shirts, shows them sitting cross-legged on the ground, gazing into each other’s eyes as Harry plays the guitar. Although they haven’t confirmed the date or location of the photos, they seem to be in the early stages of their budding romance.
The first was a three-week trip to Botswana in July 2016, and the second was a visit in August 2017 during which they discussed getting engaged. The couple traveled to Africa on two separate occasions while they were dating.
The Prince spoke about snatching Meghan away for their third date during the couple’s engagement interview “We shared a tent under the stars and camped together.
Then we were truly alone, which was important to me so that we could have a chance to get to know one another.”
Meghan returned “completely spellbound,” according to royal biographers Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand in Finding Freedom, after their stay together in a plush tent in the Okavango Delta. They continued, “Her phone was full of photos—nature shots, self-portraits, and selfies with Harry—that they had taken.”
The following year, the couple went back to celebrate Meghan’s 36th birthday, staying at the Meno a Kwena camp in Botswana. According to Omid and Carolyn, the couple “felt more connected than ever” on their trip to Africa, and that’s where Harry “made his intentions very clear.”
A sweet nod to the country that has a special place in their hearts, Harry got down on one knee with an engagement ring after returning to the UK. It features a natural diamond sourced from Botswana.
