Prince Harry and Meghan Markle talked openly about how their relationship began and why it was best that they didn’t know anything about one another.
Their romance began in London, where they first connected over drinks at Soho House’s Dean Street Townhouse in the summer of 2016. A mutual friend had set them up on a blind date. After Harry proposed with a diamond trilogy ring while they were preparing a roast dinner at their previous home, Nottingham Cottage, in 18 months, they were reflecting on how they could “start afresh” in their engagement interview.
Even though the Duke of Sussex is an important member of the popular British royal family, his future wife Duchess Meghan acknowledged that because of her upbringing in America, she knew little about his life.
“You don’t grow up with the same understanding of the royal family because I’m from the United States. The only question I had for her when she said she wanted to set us up was: “Is he nice?” Despite the fact that I now completely understand that there is a global interest there. It just didn’t seem to make sense if he weren’t kind.
“After meeting for a drink, we immediately started talking about our plans for the following day. We ought to reconnect, “She spoke to the BBC.
Upon being questioned about whether Harry had seen the former Suits actress on television before their initial meeting, he responded: “I hadn’t even heard of her, so no.
“I had never heard of Meghan before and had never watched Suits, so seeing her in that room completely caught me off guard. I noticed she was sitting there and realized I would need to step up my game, so I sat down to ensure a good conversation “He laughed as he gave his then-fiancée a tender look.
It was “refreshing,” Meghan continued, to establish their relationship from scratch and get to know one another in a very private, intimate setting free from outside influences.
She uttered: “Given that I didn’t know a lot about him, learning about him through him was really refreshing for both of us rather than growing up around various news stories, tabloids, or other sources of information.
For both of us, it was just a really genuine and organic way to get to know each other. “Everything I knew about him and his family was what he would share with me and vice versa.”
He emphasized that it was “hugely refreshing to be able to get to know someone who isn’t necessarily within your circle,” as a result of people “thinking they know” a lot about Harry. He went on: “to be able to start almost from scratch, from the beginning, and gradually get to know one another.
“Following just two dates, the couple effectively went on vacation together in the middle of nowhere, sharing a tent, and other such activities. Being able to get to know her so quickly was fantastic, amazing even.”
In a later interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan claimed that because she hadn’t done any research on the Queen or her family members before meeting the royals, she had only discovered the curtsy minutes before meeting the late monarch.
In 2017, Harry proposed to Meghan with an engagement ring made of a Botswana diamond flanked by two diamonds from the collection of his late mother, Princess Diana. They were married in May 2018 and are now proud parents of Archie and Lilibet.
