When the Queen participated in a zoom call with the winners of the Australians of the Year award and the country’s governor-general, David Hurley, as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations on Saturday, the winners were in tears.
During the call, David reflected on the monarch’s opening of Parliament House in Canberra 34 years ago today, and the governor-general was met with a hilarious response from the 96-year-old.
“Oh!” the Queensaid. “That little pond inside intrigued me very much indeed. I wondered how many people had fallen in it,” she giggled.
The pond in question is known as the ‘pool of reflection,’ and it is located inside Parliament House. Her Majesty’s knowledge of the fact that it has become notorious in Canberra for causing such incidents was unclear.
The Queen praised the six winners’ “marvellous work” while on the zoom call, which took place last month.
Dylan Alcott, a 31-year-old Paralympic gold medalist, was one of them.
“This is awesome,” he said, before matching her wit and joking that he “unfortunately won a couple of Wimbledon titles,” defeating Great Britain’s players, which she may or may not have been “happy about,” but certainly got her laughing.

Dr. Daniel Nour, 25, who founded a groundbreaking medical service for vulnerable and homeless people, was also on the line.
Daniel told the Queen that the idea for the service came to him while he was studying at Imperial College London after witnessing a man having a seizure at Waterloo train station.
The winners told Australia’s Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) about how fabulously “cheeky” the Queen was after the catch-up.
“She’s cheeky,” Daniel said. I like how she’s a little sassy. She had a sly grin on her face… and was so lovely and down to earth.”
“She’s pretty cool,” Dylan added. She was lovely and said, “I’m not going to lie.” She was stunning, and it was an enormous honor for her to be able to represent Australia as a whole.
“The six of us were extremely fortunate, and it’s something I’ll never forget.”
