She isn’t the only one; the Duchess of Sussex, despite being right-handed, was often seen carrying her purse in her left hand when she was a senior working member of the royal family.

Well, wonder no longer, because etiquette expert Myka Meier says there’s a simple reason for it, and it has to do with greetings.

Kate holds her bag in her left hand while attending the many functions she attends as a royal, allowing her right hand to greet and shake hands with guests.

Myka explained why on her Instagram account in 2019, alongside a photo of the late Princess Diana setting an example: “Handbags or briefcases should be held in the LEFT hand when entering a room or event so that your right hand is free to meet, greet, and shake hands! This is also something Prince Charles does!”

During the coronavirus pandemic, the royals were unable to shake hands with those they met, so Prince Charles and others began greeting people with a Namaste instead.
