The Duchess of Cambridge has arrived in Denmark for her first solo trip outside of the United Kingdom since 2017. The Duchess of Cambridge’s most recent solo trip was to Luxembourg in 2017.
The 40-year-old Duchess of Cambridge arrived in Copenhagen on Tuesday for a two-day visit to promote her Early Childhood Foundation and commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee year.
Emma Hopkins, the British ambassador to Denmark, greeted her upon her arrival. Kate’s visit to Denmark is her second; the first was in 2011, shortly after her royal wedding to Prince William.
Kate’s first stop was at the University of Copenhagen, where she met with world-renowned researchers working on the Copenhagen Infant Mental Health Project (CIMHP), which aims to improve the mental health of infants and their parents’ relationships.
The royal will be hosted by Queen Margrethe II, who, like Queen Elizabeth, is celebrating her Jubilee this year at Christian IX’s Palace. (Queen Margrethe has been on the throne for 50 years, while Queen Elizabeth has been on the throne for 70 years.)
After experiencing mild symptoms, the 81-year-old Danish monarch recently recovered from COVID-19. According to Buckingham Palace, Queen Elizabeth, 95, has been diagnosed with coronavirus and is currently suffering from “mild, cold-like symptoms.”
Kate will also pay a visit to the Mary Foundation, which was founded in 2007 by the Crown Princess to protect vulnerable women and children from domestic violence. Princess Mary recently celebrated her 50th birthday. The visit serves as a reminder of the two royal families’ long-standing friendship.
Kate will spend the two days learning about how Denmark has “created an enabling culture for early childhood development,” including “how it has promoted infant mental wellbeing alongside physical health, and how it harnesses the power of nature, relationships, and playful learning in the first five years of life,” according to Kensington Palace.
Kate is bringing the work of The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, which aims to raise awareness of and encourage the best work for children aged 0 to 5 and their caregivers, to the international stage for the first time.
The Duchess of Cambridge’s most recent major overseas trip was to Pakistan in 2019 with her husband, Prince William. Her most recent solo tour took her to Luxembourg in 2017. William just returned from a solo overseas trip to Dubai.
