If Lilibet Diana’s christening is not held in the United Kingdom, senior members of the royal family are expected to be absent.
Lilibet Diana, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s second child, was born a few months ago on June 4 in Santa Barbara, California, and the murky details surrounding her christening have royalist tongues wagging.
The Telegraph reported that a palace insider said there would “not be a christening in the UK,” sparking speculation about the location of the ceremony (if there is one).
According to royal expert and Majesty Magazine editor-in-chief Ingrid Seward, senior members of the royal family (including Queen Lizzie herself) would be highly unlikely to attend a christening in the United States.
This isn’t the first time the king or queen has been absent.
Although a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said yesterday that plans for the christening “have not been finalised,” senior royal members such as Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are unlikely to attend.
However, this would not be the first time that prominent relatives have skipped a family christening.
Due to being in Sandringham at the time, Her Majesty and Prince Philip were not present at the Sussexes’ firstborn Archie’s christening in 2019 at Windsor Castle, and the Queen also did not attend Prince Louis’ ceremony in 2018.
Seward, a royal biographer, says she would be “very surprised” if Harry and Meghan chose to have Lilibet’s wedding in the United States.
‘The Queen is not going to say no,’ says the narrator.
“Harry’s great-grandmother is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England – and Meghan was inducted into the Church of England,” Seward told The Sun of the royal christening tradition in the family “..
Seward suggested that the couple hold a private wedding ceremony for Lilibet in Windsor Castle’s chapel.
“The Queen will not say no; she may not be able to attend herself, but she will not say they cannot have it.”
“The only reason [it wouldn’t be held in the UK] would be if Meghan didn’t want to bring the baby over here,” Seward explained.
Is Oprah going to be your godmother?
Who will be chosen as godparents, arguably the most interesting aspect of any A-list christening?
Seward believes that Princess Eugenie (Prince Harry’s cousin), or Zara Tindall (also Harry’s cousin) and her husband Mike Tindall – all of whom are close to the Sussexes – could land Lilibet the coveted role, with Eugenie being one of the “obvious” choices.
“Godparents are usually friends of the mother and friends of the father. You’re carrying on a family tradition “Seward stated. “When it comes to godparents, you usually want someone you’ve known your whole life.”
Meghan has a lot of American friends, according to Seward, who could be candidates.
Oprah Winfrey, the legendary philanthropist, author, host, and actor, is one of these American friends speculated as Lilibet’s godmother by the Hollywood rumour mill – and boy, I can already imagine the collective envy felt by everyone around the world wishing Oprah was their godparent, too…
