15 times the royals were spotted in unexpected places

You wouldn’t expect to see a member of the royals shopping at a discount store or drinking a pint in their neighborhood pub, but the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and other members of the royal family have been known to surprise us.

Remember when Kate went last-minute Christmas shopping at The Range in 2018 or when Harry stopped by for a cheeky Nando’s on Kensington High Street? Take a trip down memory lane to see where you might have seen the royals!

Whole Foods: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle first started dating in 2016, they went to great lengths to keep their relationship a secret. In May 2021, the Duke revealed on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast that he and his future wife devised a secret way to meet in public.

“The first time Meghan and I met for her to come and stay with me, we met up in a supermarket in London, pretending we didn’t know each other and texting each other from opposite sides of the aisles,” Harry explained.

“People are staring at me, giving me strange looks, and coming up to me and saying ‘hi,'” he continued.

“‘Is this the right one?’ I texted her.” ‘No, you want parchment paper,’ she said, and I was like, ‘Where is the parchment paper?!’

“I was wearing a baseball cap and looking down at the ground, trying to blend in.”

While Harry did not specify which supermarket she was shopping at, Meghan was previously seen walking alone through the gates of Kensington Palace after returning from a trip to Whole Foods.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at St Andrews’ Forgan’s restaurant
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were spotted leaving Forgan’s restaurant in St Andrews after a romantic meal during their week-long tour of Scotland in May 2021.

“There was a crowd outside when they left, but it was quiet inside,” said manager Marc, who did not want to reveal his last name.

“There was no pomp and circumstance or fanfare, they were very nice, and they were very complimentary when they left.”

William and Kate also stopped by the award-winning Anstruther Fish Bar for a low-key takeaway the next day during a busy day of engagements.

According to the Daily Mail, the couple were “regular customers” at the pier when they were students 20 years ago, ordering a £7.95 haddock supper wrapped in paper, which they ate on a bench near the pier.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex at Montecito’s Lucky’s Steakhouse

In October 2020, Harry and Meghan were spotted out and about in their new neighborhood. With their friends Katharine McPhee and David Foster, Harry and Meghan dined at Lucky’s Steakhouse in Montecito.

Steaks, seafood dishes, and an extensive wine list are among the restaurant’s main courses.

At the end of 2020, Lucky’s Steakhouse will open its second location in Malibu.

At the Hollywood Arms pub in Chelsea, the Duchess of Cambridge
Shortly after Princess Charlotte started at Thomas’s school in Battersea in September 2019, Kate reportedly enjoyed a drink with her fellow school mums at the Hollywood Arms in Chelsea. The Duchess is said to have entered the meet and greet through a back alleyway that her brother-in-law Prince Harry is said to have used.

The Duchess of Cambridge at Sainsbury’s.

During autumn half-term in 2019, Kate was spotted browsing the Halloween costumes in the Hardwick branch of Sainsbury’s in King’s Lynn (near the Cambridges’ country home Anmer Hall) with Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

“Another shopper said Kate was in the shop near the clothing and pointed her out to me,” said fellow shopper Kathy Whittaker. I couldn’t believe my eyes!

“She was looking at Halloween outfits with Charlotte and George, but her bodyguard was kind of watching people with phones and telling them not to take pictures.” While she was at the self-service check out, I was able to get a photo of her.

“I didn’t see what she purchased.” Kate was asking her children what they were going to be for Halloween, according to the lady who informed me that she was there. I believe she bought some Halloween decorations for her family, but I’m not sure what.”

At Carrow Road Stadium, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
Prince George and Princess Charlotte, William and Kate’s eldest children, attended their first football match at Norwich City’s stadium. The Cambridges were in attendance as William’s favorite team, Aston Villa, defeated the home side 5-1, and Prince George couldn’t contain his delight at the goals.

At The Rose & Crown, The Sussexes
Prince Harry and Meghan were also spotted at a pub near their home this summer. The new parents dined at The Rose & Crown in Winkfield village, about ten minutes’ drive from Frogmore Cottage.

The royals reportedly ate a £15 Sunday roast, and while Harry reportedly drank a couple of pints of beer during the two-hour visit, Meghan appeared to stick to water, according to The Sun. Archie, their son, slept in a car seat next to their table. The royals sat inside, despite the heat, and went largely unnoticed by other customers. They were accompanied by a royal aide and were guarded by two security officers.

At The Range with the Duchess of Cambridge
It’s good enough for Kate, so it’ll do for us! The Duchess was one of many frantic shoppers doing last-minute Christmas shopping at The Range in Norfolk. Kate was seen shopping for gifts at the outlet store, which is a 15-minute drive from Sandringham, with Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

“I recognized little Prince George holding Kate’s hand and Charlotte with a red bow in her hair,” a fellow mother told The Sun. When Kate arrived at the cash register, I summoned the courage to ask if she’d take a selfie with me and my children. She politely declined the invitation. She was so sweet, explaining that she was just doing some holiday shopping.”

At Pines and Needles, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex
Harry and Meghan followed all of the coupley traditions for their first Christmas together, including buying their first tree and decorating it together. The couple went on a low-key outing to Battersea’s Pines and Needles, where they picked up a medium-sized tree.

“They came in around 8.30 p.m. last night,” a shop spokesperson told HELLO! “Prince Harry was with Meghan, and the staff couldn’t believe it when they only recognized Meghan at first – they were overjoyed to see the girl from Suits there.” They were gloved and hatted despite the fact that it wasn’t particularly cold. “They arrived in a car and selected a tree – they were there for about 15 minutes browsing and looking, then they selected their tree and Harry carried it back to the car on his shoulder once it was netted up.”

Peter Jones with the Duchess of Cambridge
Kate was seen picking up Prince George’s school uniform in Peter Jones on Sloane Square in September 2018, just like any other parent. Kate not only demonstrated that she is a hands-on mother, but she also demonstrated that she makes the same rookie parenting mistakes as the rest of us.

Kate showed up to buy her children’s school shoes without one important item – their socks, according to a source. George and Charlotte had to borrow a pair of summer sandals from the shop in order to try on their stylish new shoes.

Prince Harry at Nando’s
Nando’s is a favorite of royal brothers William and Harry, just like the rest of us. His personal protection officer introduced the future King to the chicken shop, and he admitted that the restaurant chain is “very good.”

His brother Harry was caught doing a midnight order in the Fulham branch in 2013. Harry, who was 24 at the time, tried to blend in by wearing jeans and a polo shirt while partially concealing himself under a baseball cap. He and his friend ordered a double chicken breast wrap with a medium spice marinade and a side of regular chips, as well as a chicken breast fillet in pita bread with a lemon and herb marinade and a side of creamy mash. Harry, you’ve done an excellent job!

Ryanair’s Prince William
In 2015, the second-in-line to the throne was spotted boarding a Ryanair flight to Glasgow, surprising fellow passengers. William, who was dressed casually, was flying with the East Anglian Air Ambulance and was in Scotland for training.

“The plane was delayed for about 20 minutes and nobody knew why,” an eyewitness told The Sun. Then we noticed the Prince was on board when it landed. I didn’t expect to see him on Ryanair, but it’s nice to see a member of the royal family fly for a low fare.”

The royals do, in fact, prefer to fly on budget airlines. William and Kate have flown Flybe before, and in the summer of 2019, they were spotted disembarking a Flybe plane in Aberdeen with their three children and nanny. The Cambridges were in Scotland to pay a visit to the Queen.

At Ilapothecary, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex
Meghan was spotted shopping in London just a few weeks before giving birth to her son Archie. She and Prince Harry spent two hours at Ilapothecary, which is conveniently located near their Kensington Palace residence. Natural products such as eye serum, body balm, face mists, and bath soaks are available at the shop, which bills itself as a “haven of peace, calm, and tranquillity.”

At Waitrose, the Duchess of Cambridge
When she’s staying at the royals’ country home, Kate is a regular customer of Waitrose, and she’s often seen picking up her groceries in the Norfolk branch, bag of life in hand. During the school holidays, she and William also place an online order, and Prince George has offered assistance on several occasions. When the delivery van arrives at the door, George asks which bag he can carry, according to The Sun. What a lovely gesture!
