Kate Middleton and Prince William Open Up About ‘Difficult Time’ Since Prince Philip’s Death

Prince Philip is “their much loved grandfather and great-grandfather,” according to Kate Middleton and Prince William.

Following Prince Philip’s death in April, Gert’s Royal Replies shared a note they received from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in response to a condolences message.

The response was a folded card with Prince William and Kate’s individual monograms on the outside, sent in an envelope with a royal mail stamp and the Kensington Palace logo. Inside is a photo of Prince Philip in military uniform taken in 2012 at Windsor Castle for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Armed Forces Parade and Muster. There’s also a typed note, with a black border around both pages to represent mourning.

The note reads, “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge thank you for your kind words following The Duke of Edinburgh’s death.” “The many thoughtful messages they have received in recent weeks have deeply moved Their Royal Highnesses. They will all miss their much-loved grandfather and great-grandfather, but your message has brought them great comfort during this trying time.”

Following Prince Philip’s death, Kate and William shared a number of never-before-seen photos of Philip with their three children on social media. A sweet photo of Prince George sitting in a carriage with his great-grandfather accompanied Prince William’s heartfelt tribute to his grandfather.

From back in 2015, Prince William and Kate shared a new photo with the Queen, Prince Philip, and their two eldest children. The photo, which was taken in Balmoral Castle, shows a young Prince George holding hands with his father while a baby Princess Charlotte steals a glance at her great-grandparents, with the Queen smiling back.

Prince William said he felt “lucky” to have Prince Philip’s example well into his adult life in a tribute shared on social media.

“I’ll be forever grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for his kindness,” he said. “I’ll never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa riding in his carriage to pick them up and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure and mischievous sense of humour!”
