Prince Charles Gave Prince Harry and Meghan a “Substantial Sum” of Money When They Left Royal Life, Aide Says

Prince Harry’s comments in an interview with Oprah earlier this year that his family had “literally cut me off financially” in the first quarter of 2020 drew a lot of attention. Officials working for Prince Charles have now briefed journalists on the financial arrangements surrounding the Sussexes’ departure from royal life, claiming that the Prince of Wales supported them with a “substantial sum” shortly after they stepped down.

The most recent details were revealed when the royal household released its annual accounts for the fiscal year ending in March 2021. Prince Charles’ household also publishes an annual review that shows how he has spent his income from the Duchy of Cornwall, in addition to the Sovereign Grant report, which is published by Buckingham Palace and covers the expenditure of public funds. In terms of Harry and Meghan’s spending in the previous financial year, a senior Clarence House spokesman said Prince Charles set aside a “substantial sum” to help them make the transition to financial independence. According to the spokesman, this funding ceased in the summer of last year. Later, a spokesperson for Harry and Meghan clarified that Harry’s remarks about being cut off in the first quarter of 2020 referred to the first quarter of the financial year, which began in April 2020. The couple officially left the royal life at the end of March 2020, entering what was described as a “transitional year” in which they could try a new life.

Harry and Meghan announced a multi-year production deal with Netflix in September 2020, rumored to be worth up to $150 million. They announced a second deal with streaming service Spotify in December. Meghan is also the author of The Bench, a best-selling children’s book. The couple has purchased a home in Santa Barbara, and it is becoming clear that they intend to make the United States their permanent residence.

The Sussexes paid a “lump sum of £2.4 million” in September 2020 “to reimburse the Sovereign Grant for expenditure incurred on the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage,” according to the Sovereign Grant report published by Buckingham Palace. According to the report, some of the lump sum has been allocated as rental payment in order for them to keep the property as their UK base—a deal that royal officials claim covers all of their obligations and is beneficial to the Sovereign Grant and taxpayer.
